I kept my Ford backhoe under a tarp for the first 8 or 10 tears I had it. The hoe, the front bucket and the tires were in the weather but everything else stayed dry. I put a plastic bucket over the exhaust to keep it from cutting through and tied it at the corners and two places on each side. With practice I got to where I could cover it in about ten minutes, uncover in five.
An ugly solution, and often a pain in the butt, but it's better than having the rear end fill up with water.
