All good explanations, but I can't resist. If you have a bad one, it stands for "Terrible Accessory". The T/A on early tractors was not as good as the later versions. If you left it in the low side on an early tractor and went down a hill, good luck to you! The low side does not hold back it will freewheel. Couple this with those lousy brakes that they had and you're in trouble.

We had a kid remember to put the t/a in direct a little too late on a 560 one time. That was not a cheap one to fix! He started down a long hill with a load of ensilage and it started to freewheel. When the brakes would no longer hold it, he dropped the t/a and set off the grenade effect.

I never had any experience with the 06, 56, 66 & 86 series t/a, but I do have bad memories of the early ones.
