I think others have said that the hydraulics on an H are too slow (low gpm?) to be really useful with a log splitter.

If dead heading the hyraulic pump will stall the motor, either it is really tired or the pressure relief valve is not working.

Try T-ing the return line into the fill pipe or the drain plug. What are you going to do to return the ram ?
