Cub Cadet Hydro probs?

Cub Cadet 1983 model something, not sure. has 42" deck and a Briggs twin. Just picked it up second hand. When warming up the transmission chatters, but then it smooths out. It is also varying in speed occassionaly. Also have noticed a leak in the rear differential. How do you check fluid levels? I don"t have a service manual and would like to find one. I do have the model # and serial [not right now].
