Thanks for the help. I think things must have been bouncing around enough that the internal splines are not just going to magically line up properly. I was tapping the shaft back through, but got to a point and was requiring much more "persuasion" than I thought it should. If I pull the shaft the rest of the way out, can I see inside well enough to get it lined up properly? Of course I will probably have to remove the ROPS and fender to get my eyeball lined up to see what is inside.
