I work for the USDA/ARS and deal mainly with cool season grasses. One year we received som grasses from Alaska, put them in the greenhouse to make sure they were going to survive the shock of being uprooted. They all died, but I left the pots for 6 months just to make sure. One day I was checking the pots and a small green sprout was growing. I couldn't tell what is was so I left it. It turned out to be an evergreen, I haven't had time to ID it. It currently is planted in front of my house and is 8 feet tall. I didn't think it would survive in eastern Washington state.
