About 10 years ago at my old house I took a maple seed from a tree in the front yard and planted it just to see if I could grow a tree. by the time I left the house in 1998 the little tree was about 15" high and had a little stem anchored in the ground. I dont know if the little maple is still there, I planted it in a flower bed behind the deck. I would recommend picking up saplings from an arborist, sometimes they are free and planting those.
