That would depend on how good the old shaft is. On some carbs it wears badly on others it doesn't. If it has a lot of play in it I'd replace it if its tight I wouldn't. Most of the time I don't even pull them out because it can be a real pain in the $#% to do so. I do know from what I have read on this site in the Farmall area that those carbs can have a problem in that area, but I have never seen that problem on one.
