Rusty- If you are in business, farming, and are hauling the tractor interstate, and you exceed 10,000 lbs GVWR on the truck and trailer combination, then yeah you'd need a DOT number. If it's a hobby thing or you at least claim it's a hobby thing, then no you wouldn't. That's to be legal. I'm sure there are hundreds of people who do it all the time without a DOT number and never have a problem. A lot of inspectors go by the "farmer Joe/GI Joe, let him go" rule. The government gets out of inspection, usually. Also lets remember that it's not what your truck and trailer are "plated" or registered for that counts. It's what the VIN number or more usually the cab tag reads " GVWR 16,979 lbs" or whatever. You can register a Kenworth tractor for 3,000 lbs in my state, but you couldn't legally move it down the road without being over your register weight. There are exemptions for log books and licensing for farmers, but without my books here I'm not going to try and wing it and give you bad poop.
