Sure... to promote democracy & freedom... same as our mission in virtually every conflict we've ever engaged in. This one has already had an effect... Syria is finally pulling its troops from Lebanon, Khadaffi is willing to talk, there is potential for change in Iran, and there's been more progress with the Israeli/Palestinian conflict in the past year than in the previous ten.
As T. Roosevelt said, walk softly but carry a big stick... and Ronald Reagan believed in negotiating from a position of strength. I don't think the wall would have come down unless Gorby thought Reagan was willing to back up the rhetoric. Ya gotta be willing to flex some muscle or all the talking in the world will go nowhere.
Have we taken some casulties? Sure, and I know that's easy for me to say when I'm not the one being shot at... but, we've taken fewer casualties since the beginning of this conflict than we did in the opening hours of our involvement in WW II. As far as when our troops will come home... who knows??? But, many folks forget that we still have troops stationed in Europe and Asia nearly 60 years after the end of WW II & that we still have troops in Korea nearly 50 years after that one "ended", although things there aren't much different now than they were 50 years ago. I just read where N. Korea fired a missle into the Sea of Japan... maybe we should just sit back & hope they don't do it again???
A lot of folks believe our involvement in Iraq is over oil... I'm not one of them. I think we're there for purely selfish reasons... to try to solve the terrorist problem on someone else's soil... and I, for one, am seeing results. Saw in the news where the Iraqis arrested 6 criminals suspected of shooting down the helo last week... based on information provided by Iraqi citizens. The Iraqi people are tired of being used by foreigners (the "insurgents") and are finally willing to stand up for themselves. As long as that continues, we're accomplishing our mission.
Regards, DL

Today's Featured Article - History of the Nuffield Tractor - by Anthony West. The Nuffield tractor story started in early 1945. The British government still reeling from the effects of the war on the economy, approached the Nuffield organization to see if they would design and build an "ALL NEW" British built wheeled tractor, suitable for both British and world farming. ...
