I use a pop off valve so when it gets to 150 psi it pops, I only use it a little for airing up tires and running air tools other wise its just there if and when I need air. As far as the plumping you have to find out which is in let and which is the preassure side, hook the preassure side to the tank and leave the other side open to the air. An air filter is a good idea but I don't use one but probably should
