What's really screwed up about this whole fuel economy thing is the fact that even with the computer controlled, fuel injected engines of today, we still are not getting any better fuek mileage than we did 30, 40, or even 50 years ago. The first car I owned was a 1960 Chevrolet Bel-Air 4 door. Big, heavy, and comfortable, plenty of room for 6 people, could squeeze in 8 if they were friendly. This car was equipped with the 283 ci V8, rated at just under 200 hp.
It would perform on a par with anything we have today, and get an easy 20 to 22 mpg doing it. We are not progressing, we are moving backwards.
