To check the coil, pull the coil wire from the rotor cap , hold it close to a metal ground on the tractor, turn the starter and see if there is a spark. If not, make sure you have voltage to the positive side of the coil from the battery, and also check to make sure your points are breaking. If no spark, go ahead and replace the condenser. After all that and no spark means a bad coil.
