Hey Case, Odd you should bring that up. I was just in town talking to the "Red Mech" who has lived and breathed these old IHs all his adult 70-some years. I asked him if he had a dyno so that he could break in my new motor on my 966. He told me that he wished he knew who had started that silly rumor about breakin' in a diesel under a hard and heavy load. He went on to say that the first 10 hours or so, the engine needs to "loaf" and "breathe". I asked him why? Is it hard on the bearings or what? He says, "No, under a heavy load, a new piston will try to 'sweal' due to the extra pressure of that heavy load and the resultant heavier "fire" and things are just too darned tight in there. The piston and liner will then score." Says he has seen it more than a few times on new diesel engines. Dunno, Allan
