I have an JD830 with starting engine and a 730D with electric start. While the starting engine is great for spectators and for real cold weather starting, I wouldn't have one again. Way too expensive to repair, I spent nearly $3500 in parts rebuilding the starting engine/clutch/transmission. I can buy a lot of batteries for $3500. Roughly 10 years ago 830SE's were more expensive than electric start, then collectors began to realize the horrendos costs involved in rebuilding that little starting unit. Last time I looked, electric start 830's were more desirable than SE types. Although I haven't been looking recently, my guess would be $6000 for the SE and $6500 for the electric start.
It shames me to admit it, that I have $16000 in the 830 and not quite that much in the 730. In 20 or 30 years maybe inflation will catch up with me and they will be worth what has been spent on them.
