If people would PROPERLY wear a three point seat belt a front airbag is not required. A side curtain airbag is required in narrow little vehicles to protect from side impacts. That said the people in power decieded to help those who won't help themselves and mandated airbags. The origional specs was to safely stop a full sized and slightly overweght man while not wearing a seat belt in a head on crash. That said the early air-bags had lethal amounts of force when hitting small people in low energy impacts. A smart seat belt system that senses weight, seat belt tension using secure digital communications. That can't be defeated by some dumb*ss Buba pulling a wire connector off a switch under the seat. And will not allow the vehicle to run the engine while in gear would be the answer. The Nascar drivers absorb and walk away for impacts up to 200mph just by wearing a well fitted five point seat belt.
