well Josh it is real simple really. You must have spark at the right time. Do you understand how a 4 cycle engine works? Simple explanation. Piston going down draws in clean air mixed with gasoline fumes, weight of flywheel keeps it moving as the piston comes back up and squeezes the molecules real tight and as the piston just reaches the top Wham! you hit that mixture with a spark and it drives the piston back down creating your power, then the piston comes back up expelling the exhaust gasses and starts the cycle over. In a 4 cylinder engine each piston fires in a certain order so one fires every half revolution. Do a little thinking and you will understand how the intake and exhaust valves must open and close to get this properly choreographed.
