I do not know in the auto field, but I know with a lawn mower engine there are differant grades of engines, depending on what the OEM wants to spend.
The Sears, MTD, Merray, AYP,etc, box store mowers all use the cheap engines, Toro, Snapper, Lawn Boy, John Deere, the premium mowers buy a better grade of engine for their equipment, then if you buy a replacement engine from the a dealer, that engine will be the best quality you can get. Really stunned me when a rep told me that one day.
