They are both generators. An alternator generator and a direct current (DC) generator. In the UK we call your "generator" a dynamo.
The terminology comes about by people abbreviating the proper names a long? time ago as they were adopted for automobile use etc.
What do you call a mains voltage A/C generator, an alternator or a generator? Or a wind turbine/generator? (mostly A/C). Best thing to do is be specific if there is any doubt as alternators can have armature current windings rather than the (cheaper) stator current windings.
BTW armature wound alternators have much better motor-starting ability but usually are much heavier for a given output.
