What you describe is normal for any vehicle equipped with a differential...if you turn one wheel with the transmission locked up, the other wheel will turn in the opposite direction because of the gears in the differential. The noise that you describe is probably not a symptom of the larger problem you have yet to diagnose, at least in my humble opinion. The other posts give good starting points to look.
