The pto must be engaged to operate the three point hitch because the hydraulic pump is driven off the pto. That is why you also have to have the clutch released in order to use the 3 point hitch. This is what is known as "non-live" hydraulics. If you need to use the 3 point hitch while standing still, you need to put the tractor transmission in neutral and release the clutch. Don"t forget to set the brake if you"re on an incline!

As for a wiring diagram, I can"t help you there. You might try going to the Harry Ferguson discussion board on this same site for specific help with that tractor. Look at the top of the page for a drop down menu box labeled "Hop to". click on the down arrow and select "Harry Ferguson" or "Massey Ferguson". There should be people at either forum that will know where to find a schematic.
