I always use a good stout LONG Clevis on the end of the drawbar, and the drawbar set as long as it will go...the chain run through the clevis... this definitely limits the front-end lift..esentially extending the drawbar even farther...
Probably the safest way to pull on a chain is in Reverse...with the chain running under the tractor, from a clevis hooked to the front of the drawbar..!! Possible on most 2 cylinder JD's, but not possible with every brand...
