Clicking noise Ingersoll 4016

When I am backing up I notice a metal on metal clicking noise around the back end of the tractor. There is no loss of power or strange vibration. I started to notice the problem while plowing out my driveway during a snow storm. At first I thought it was the chains but after close inspection I see no place for the chain to rap against the tractor. The noise is not there when I drive the system in neutral so I don't think it is the hydrolics. I am tempted to take apart the rear end and see what is going on. Good idea or bad idea? Any suggestions? Oh buy the way the tractor is 9 years old and has 500 hours on it. I use it to regreade driveway ( 500' ) twice a year as well as mow 1 acre.
