I just recently went through rebuilding this same welder. Downloaded the manual from the Lincoln site (free) but it doesn't tell you a whole lot about the Onan motor and its' works. It does use two 12 volts batteries hooked together to make 24 volts. It doesn't actaully have a seperate starter motor, it starts off of the welder windings. Mine is hooked up this way and runs great now. Hope this helps a bit.
