I looked at my 444 book and I see the indicator you mention. Seems your tractor uses the glow plug indicator gauge instead of the "fifth" glow plug/indicator in the dash. In my tractor, the glow/indicator in the dash also acts as a resistor. On your 444, I think there is separate resistor (that does not glow). As far as the glow plugs themselves, they're easy to check. You can do it with a amp meter. When testing them, though, don't put full battery voltage to them. They will probably burn out in a second or so. You should take a voltage reading at the plugs and see if there is any at all. If not, trace the main lead back to look for a resistor. If you find it, check it for continuity.
