I agree with all you say LK,including that all engines would do better with a dual filter system. There are several companies marketing spin on filters with a dual element built in so they contain both full flow and tight bypass filter in one case for engines only equipped with a full flow filter. I have not tried them,so I do not know how well they work. Mobil sells a full synthetic oil for diesel engines under the Delvac 1 name. Here is a link to the site. It makes for some interesting reading. They list some great fuel economy improvements and incredibly long oil change intervals,likley possible due to the bypass oil filter found on most OTR trucks.
