Not necessarily. Was bidding on a bull one time. Decided to stop bidding. Auction stopped. Seemed my opponent, somewhere up in the bleachers as the auctioneer kept looking up there, was a myth.

I didn't really want the bull but no one was bidding on it and I needed one (had picked out another and hadn't come through the ring yet) so I bid on it.

Got a good bull (1000 lb brangus) for a reasonable price. Never know what you're bidding against at an auction.
