Your post reminds me of an incident which was related to me some time ago. It supposedly was a transcript of an actual conversation of a U.S. naval ship with Canadian authorities off the coast of Newfoundland. Canadian: Please divert your course 15 degrees South to avoid collision. American: Recommended that YOU divert YOUR course 15 degrees North to avoid collision. Canadian: Negative. YOU will have to divert YOUR course 15 degrees South to avoid a collision. American: This is the Captain of a United States Navy Ship. I say again, divert YOUR course. Canadian: With all due respect, CAPTAIN, you must divert YOUR course. American: THIS IS THE AIRCRAFT CARRIER USS LINCOLN, THE SECOND LARGEST SHIP IN THE UNITED STATES ATLANTIC FLEET. WE ARE ACCOMPIANED AND SUPPORTED BY THREE DESTROYERS, THREE CRUISERS, AND NUMEROUS OTHER SUPPORT VESSELS. AS CAPTAIN OF THIS SHIP, I DEMAND THAT YOU ALTER YOUR COURSE 15 DEGREES NORTH, OR COUNTER-MEASURES WILL BE UNDERTAKEN TO ENSURE THE SAFETY OF THIS SHIP AND THIS FLEET. Canadian: This is a lighthouse.....Your Call.
