I have the earlier and later Fords of this size. On my earlier ones (4 cyl) when they say behind they mean behind, but not part of the engine block casting.

If you stand on the right side of the tractor (side with the dist) look at the interface of the transmission housing and engine block. The transmission housing is much larger in diameter (allowing for the flywheel) and on it is a cover held in place with one bolt. The cover is about 1 to 1.5 inches in dia. Loosen the bolt and roll the cover out of the way.

You should be looking at the front side of the flywheel. Pull a spark plug and stick a straw down the hole. Rotate the engine till #1 (nearest the radiator) pushes it all the way up. This is TDC or TDC +/- 180 degrees. You should see scribe marks thru the hole near the outer diameter of the flywheel.

You're there.

I'd assume that the 3 cyl is in the same place. My 3 cyl is a diesel.
