I learned about diesel fuel algae while shrimping one night about 8 miles offshore and the engine (Perkins 6-354) began running erratically. We shut it down and checked the Racor fuel filter. When I pulled the element, it looked like an old mop with long, black "tenacles". An older, more seasoned shrimper buddy came to my assistance and explained what the problem was--algae growing in my tank. Problem was--the fuel tank was too large for the boat and I never could fill it to capacity. The next week I built a smaller tank and removed the big one--after that, never had any more problems. We still used the algaecide though, especially during the off season when the fuel wasn't moved much.
