When we lived in southern New Mexico, our Dachshound stayed outside and slept in his doghouse that I insulated with padded carpet and heated with a 60 watt bulb. I heard a ferocious barking at 2:00 a.m. and went out to check on him, thinking another dog had gotten in the yard and attacked him. Nope - the light bulb had burned out. As soon as I replaced the bulb he dashed into his house, curled up and went to sleep! He did like his creature comforts.
