The only thing that comes to mind are rectifiers used in the telecom industry used for floating charges across the batteries for -48 VDC systems, as well as energizing those systems when operating normally. And some of those have some pretty hefty wet cell batteries. Could work if setup correctly, but often are 220 VAC input. Many of the inverters for UPS's are also 48 VDC output across the series of battery jars.

Might be able to pickup something from a place in Chicago called "Communications Equipment Brokers", or a place out of Dallas called "Source Telecommunications". Might be able to get some of that old stuff cheap, but is often the size of a house and generally weighs a ton. Lot of different manufacturers: Northern Telecom/Nortel, Loraine, LeMarche, etc. Just tossed two perfectly good 50 amp output 48 VDC rectifiers a couple of weeks ago because cust got new switch, they weighed a ton, and although know will need for someone's old junker hard to find parts for switch eventually, ... in the dumpster they went. Sorry.
