Larry. I usually have good luck with this on flat head engines. In the future you might try puttin a little oil in the cylinders and rotating the engine slowly with the crank to distribute the oil before storage time. i also find that a little 2 cycle oil mixed in the gas along with the gas stabilizer helps and if you use a good grade of low ash it shouldn't smoke when running
