Barry, the babbit on the rods is probably worn.(assuming yours has babbit rods). They wear sort of egg shaped. You can go in and take shims out to tighten it up but if it's egged you can't take it all out.If you take out too much then it will lock the crank.Take the cover off the top of the cranckcase and roll the flywheel. You can tell real quick if you have too much clearence.Get a parts cataloge and IT shop manual. If thats the problem take your time! If your rods still have babbit just get the clearence right(even if it's egged a little),and forget it. Thats the bueaty of babbit. If you are out of babbit you have to get the rods rebabbited. Remember these tractors are old and will not sound like the V8 in your car, they are loose. I like to run 20-50 oil in mine since I'm in Alabama. It could be something else are a combination, maybe even nothing to worry about.
