just replaced the head on my 88 f150 300 cu in 6 this last labor day weekend for the same problem. thought the head gasket was out...turned out there was a one inch crack in the head in #3 hole. engine has never been overheated, don't know how it happened. have talked to several engine buildrs and they did'nt think it was possible to crack a 300 head. before i swapped the head it would blow white smoke all over at start up and if you smell the exaust it has a alcohol smell.
