The 2.9L is a great engine, about 150hp (good for a Ranger) and will last 200K with basic maintenance. Around 200 though you want replace the timing chain. Most of the ones I see parked are because the tranni failed and the rest of it wasn't worth the $1500 it would take to fix it.

I ran our 91 Ranger up to 160K and sold it to my nephew to drive in college - he's put another 20K of HARD miles on it and it still isn't burning any oil and it gets 22+ MPG.
