My elderly Father, now deceased, lost several engines before we realized he was driving with the automatic in the wrong gear, and overspeeding the engine, because his hearing was bad enough that he did not realize it. We solved that problem by installing a REV LIMITER to hold the engine RPM's down to a safe level, when he tried to get up to highway speed in the wrong gear.

Now, I'm not saying that's a problem for your Dad, but it's a possibility.

Also, a lot of late model vehicles have a rev limiter built into the engine computer, don't know if that's the case with your Dad's pickup, though.
