Napa brand oil filters?.

When I go to Napa to buy a filter for something, they always have 2 selections availible, I'm always asked by the counter help if I want the better one (Napa Gold), or the cheap one. I got in a discussion about it at work, I had always bought the Napa Gold ones because I figgured a few bucks more was cheaper than an engine rebuild, but I was told that I'm throwing away money on the Napa Gold filters and the "cheap" filters are just as good and the only difference between the two is whats printed on the box. I know the Napa Gold filter box advertises better filtration, and I know that manufacturers tend to exagerate on how good their products really are, so, the question is, "am I really wasting my money on the more expensive Napa Gold filters?".
