I kind of suspect there are problems in addition to the EGR valves. If the trouble light comes on and the engine is running open loop. The computer is just guessing at fuel mixture, timing and never locks the torque convertor. If the EGR doesn't function at cruise the engine may suffer severe detonation/ping/knock or whater ever you call it. The computer will hear the knock and retard the timing right bck into the gas guzzler zone. Yet full throttle power will be fine. I've sen Ford EGR valves with the position feed back circuit way out of calibration. No exhaust into the engine but feed back said there was. Engine ran fine after some backyard EGR tweaking.
