I think it's time for some clutch work! I had almost the same exact symptoms: when I first started my 8N up I would have to cram it into first at low engine speed because the clutch wouldn't release completely. Once I got it in gear I could go forward but if I stepped on the clutch again the tractor would continue forward for a time, or until I stepped on the brake. My mechanic said he thought the face plate (pressure plate) could be coming loose from being worn down to the rivets. When he cracked it open, he needed to replace the pressure plate and throwout bearing as well. Better get it fixed before it quits altogether out in the woods or in the middle of a busy road! Thankfully, mine was fixed just before the first plowable snow here. Carl S. in NH
