rear wheel adjustmant help

I'm trying to adjust the width of the rear tires on my 1650 diesel rowcrop. I have taken off the tire so only the hub is on the axle, loosened off all the nuts of the U - bolts and I cant get the hub to slide out, or the u- bolts to come out- they're almost rusted out so I want to replaced them but I cant get them out, even a sledgehamer doesn't work. Would it be a wise idea to cut the u- bolts out if I cant get it loose any way or would it be a better idea to drive the tractor around a bit to try to loosen it up?
