Well on one hand the signs are put there for a reason. It is the only way to warn a driver of the bridge condition.

On the other hand the signs are put up to cover the states rear end. More of a warning if you cross this bridge and break it you will pay to repair it.

There are two kinds of weight signs. The white sign like a speed limit sign and the yellow sign like a ramp warning sign.
The yellow sign is just a warning and that is the main reason you never see them much any more.
The white sign is a law and if you break the bridge your insurance co. will be very mad at you. They can also fine you for crossing a white sign bridge if you are over weight or not the proper length for your weight.
