I've never tried it. But I've got to wonder what's going to stop the cable from walking or slipping around the rim, getting out of shape between the lugs, or even binding into the tires at times. Chains can tear up tires pretty good as it is, and are pretty stable if fastened right. Gotta wonder how stable cable would be.

I guess you have to do what you have to do in a pinch. Then again, someone who's tried and done it might say that it works great, and that I'm clueless.

I'd hate to see you work at winding them up, and have it not go so well, or as planned, or still not have enough clearance. Smaller tires with chains? Good luck.
