I was in a similar situation recently, and found that the flat out truth was as simple and easy as it gets. No hard feelings, etc.... You might want to consider the possibility that your long time friend might either offer a promotion or a raise to get you to stay...mine did....but I turned it down. I left my old job to make less money doing something less stressful and working less hours. Money isn't everything and it could all be gone tommorrow so the only thing that is really worth a dime are the memories of a life well lived and the friends you make along the way. Just something to keep in mind because usually with more $ there comes longer hours or more responsibility, etc... Good Luck whatever route you decide to take.
