Everyone has given you good advice. I would add, never burn your bridges - and try to give at least 2 weeks notice - they might not want you to work it but it is the right thing to do. Also turn in any keys,uniforms etc on your last day.At some point after you make the initial announcment you may need to discuss pay for unused vacation , sick days etc. so it is always wise to be as honest as possible.Also tell your boss before he hears it second hand. I did the same thing 3 years ago, left after 12 1/2 years on the same job on excellent terms due to a better opportunity, but its still hard to do. Good Luck.
