Parts, tools, or anything else you care to name are all the same way. In the end it's all a matter of knowing what your looking at and what it's worth before you even think about bidding. I just sold a lot of pump parts for a high volume street washer pump for $25. I had nothing in them but the time to write the ad and the fees, which wasn't all that much, so I made about $20 or so clear. In exchange the guy that bought them got close to $400 worth of parts for $25 plus a little shipping. There are alot of great deals out there if you know what your doing....if you don't you'll always be one of those "suckers" that they say is born every minute.
