Originally the small tank was for gas to start on then switch to petroleum distillate/kerosene and in cold weather switch back to gas before shut down so it would start next time. I have found that the best thing to do to prevent gas from gumming things up from setting is to start an engine occaisonally and let it run a little ,also I have never had gas go bad in cold weather , only warm . If you shut these engines down on kerosene you would probably have to drain the carb and then open the gas valve to start them on gas after your extended idle period.I dont believe kerosene causes varnish/gumming up but not sure.
