You are sure right there! Same with books as well. I generally check on Amazon.com.or.co.uk for new price, availability and second hand prices. Often a better deal than worrying about some of the deals on e-Bay.
Also some "buy now" items can be lower cost than bidding - although this is perhaps something that is better from my side of the pond at the moment.
