Are you saying that there are 2 boxes up front? If so, somebody probably already switched to the new control.

Or is there only the 1 box plumbed into the brake line? If so, I think it should have only 3 wires. If I recall correctly, 1 is the hot from the battery (you need a 20a circuit breaker in it, though) 1 works the trailer brakes. (should vary current when you move the knob) 1 activates the trailer brake lights. (It should not vary current. it should be either on or off.) (And why they used a circuit separate from the vehicle, I don't know.) All the rest of the wiring for the plug should be wired into the brake/turn lights on the rear of the truck.
OH-if its like mine, you can manually apply the brakes by sliding the knob. and if you turn the knob you vary how much the brakes are applied on the trailer. (The more the knob moves, the more brakes.)

I'm just telling you how mine is. Yours might be different-so be careful.
