Resistor on JD 50

Anyone want to tell me why Deere put a resistor in between the ignition and the coil? Maybe to increase condensor life? My dad pulled one off his and found it started better, ( the resistor coils were bad and voltagevaried from .46 to 9.78 VDC ) he said Ford did the same thing to the N series.
